We all honored Luis Ruelas on Sunday, May 31, as he celebrated a quarter century as our chef. Luis began working with us when we reopened in 1990 after our year-long reconstruction, and he has presided skillfully and creatively over the kitchen ever since then. When we began offering retreat ministry again after the fire, the first question many people asked was: “Is Luis Still with you?” He was 24 when he joined the staff here and we have watched him grow into a fine, fine man, who with his wonderful wife Marta has raised a lovely family of four daughters, and now several grandchildren. What a privilege that has been for us!
Muchas, muchas gracias, Luis!
The annual Chapter of the Order of the Holy Cross will be held June 9-14 at Holy Cross Monastery, West Park, NY.
Four of the brothers from Mount Calvary will attend: Adam, Tom, Will and Bob. Br. Timothy will be taking this time to make a much-delayed retreat at the Immaculate Heart Hermitage of the Camaldolese Benedictines in Big Sur. Br. Bob has already left and is spending some time with family and friends and will join us there. Br. Tom will take some vacation time afterward. Tom, Bob and I (Adam) fly out of LAX VERY early Monday morning (12:20 am) on the red-eye to Charlotte and then on to Hartford. Bob, Will and I will return from Hartford via Newark to LAX on Monday, June 15.
We won’t be open for guests while we are gone, but our good friends from the Community of Divine Love will be at Mount Calvary for their own retreat and chapter time. And our excellent staff will use the week to catch up on maintenance and cleaning.
