Our New Brother

It is with joy that we announce that this Tuesday, May 12, Brother Timothy Jolley, OHC, will arrive and join the community here at Mount Calvary Monastery. Brother Timothy has spent two extended periods with us here.  The first was for a year’s sabbatical in 2012-13, and the second was a six month period recovering from shoulder surgery during the second half of 2014.  In addition, Timothy was stationed in Santa Barbara from 1995-98, so he knows the community here well.
Br. Timothy has had a distinguished career in OHC, if monks can be said to have careers.  The only ladder we are encouraged to climb is Benedict’s 12-step Ladder of Humility (RB, Chapter 7)!  Timothy served as Prior of Holy Cross Monastery, West Park, from 1984 to 1995, during which time he strove mightily to bring the buildings and finances into good repair.  In 1998 he moved to South Africa and was one of the three OHC brothers, along with Andrew Colquhoun and John Forbis, who were the founders of OHC’s Mariya uMama weThemba Monastery in Grahamstown, South Africa.  And he was the sparkplug for the foundation of our Holy Cross School next to the Grahamstown monastery, which serves the mostly poor and disadvantaged rural children of our part of the Eastern Cape.
It is a joy to welcome Timothy to our fellowship!
On a sadder note, our Brother Andrew Colquhoun died on Wed., May 6.  He had moved back to Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, NY, in 2010, after 12 years in South Africa.  He was life professed in 1994.  At the time of his death he was 77 years old, and had suffered from pulmonary fibrosis for some years.  Br. Andrew was a passionate Scot by birth and nature, a great lover of Celtic spirituality and culture and a fine harpist.  First ordained in the Church of Scotland, his skills from years of pastoral ministry as both a Presbyterian and an Anglican and as a hospital chaplain and CPE supervisor brought him a wide circle of spiritual friends.
The Brothers of Mount Calvary Monastery will recite the Office of the Dead for Andrew this Wednesday, May 13, and we invite you to join us by intention and in your prayers.  His funeral will be at Holy Cross Monastery, West Park NY on May 31.

    Dear Brothers

I am so sorry to hear about Bro. Andrew’s passing away to the next world. I met Andrew when he was in SAfrica. We work together with him and Bro. Timothy in Religious Life Council. I am sure he will be greatly missed by his Community. May his soul rest in peace!
